Customers and butchers often ask 7 Brown Farms: what is the secret to your beef? The real answer is having all of the basics done well - season over season, so that strong calves become solid steers. However, one added step that we have found helps the pasture finish of our cattle is adding some omega-3 fish oil to our on-farm, mixed grain rations. We know from published meat science that pasture-raised, grain-finished beef cuts are loaded with omega-6 fatty acids good for your heart, brain, and body. However, we also feel that it is possible to balance omega 3 benefits with our program through this supplement. We know other beef producers that swear by feeding sweet potatoes, carrots, or sorghum to perfect the finish of their meat products. With large packer lots, there is simply little upside to adding in this extra effort. But, by buying family direct meats, you help all of us better innovate, test, and learn from positive feedback.
